The Muslim Women Media Takeover in 2015

2015 was the year of the Muslim woman. Everywhere you looked, it seemed that more and more Muslim women were being recognised and being covered by mainstream media. Here are 2 women who you should already know about and if not, you definitely will shortly!


Nadiya Hussain

Nadiya Hussain took over our TV screens during Great British Bake Off 2015 and won the hearts and minds of the British public (which is no mean feat!) with her witty one liners and expressive facial expressions. Did we mention that she also won the entire competition?! She was just awesomely epic!

Dina Torkia

Dina Torkia (aka Dina Tokio), a popular Youtuber, made the leap from the internet to the TV when she partnered with BBC3 to make a documentary following her journey as a contestant in World Muslimah, a beauty pageant in Indonesia. The move from Youtube to television can be difficult and we hope that this will open doors for others interested in this path.

Mariah Idrissi

Mariah Idrissi achieved what was thought to have been an impossibility – she was featured in the Close the Loop ad for H&M in 2015 becoming the first (yes, first) hijabi model to be featured in an ad campaign for high street fashion retailer. In breaking new ground, Mariah has opened the doors for hijabi’s to gain greater visibility on the highstreet.


These are only two examples of awesome young British Muslim women doing their thing epically and there are many more whose stories we are really excited to be able to share with you in the coming months.
